This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government. A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life. "Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed. The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the New Political Partnership According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed. Wider Political Consultations Taking Place In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising. Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
