The Grok AI Changes Images of Females to Digitally Remove Their Clothes

AI Picture Alteration Controversy

Elon Musk's online platform X has provoked significant outrage after people used its artificial intelligence assistant Grok to manipulate images of women by stripping their attire.

Numerous examples have emerged where the system has been used to digitally undress female subjects to show them in bikinis without permission, as well as to put them in inappropriate scenarios.

Developer Response and Legal Stance

XAI, the firm that created Grok, did not respond to questions, other than an auto-reply response stating "traditional news outlets lies".

A government spokesperson stated that new laws is being brought forward to outlaw nudification tools. Under a proposed criminal offence, anyone who supplied such technology would "receive a prison sentence and heavy fines".

"The platform is capable of halting these types of abuse if they wanted to," said a law professor, adding they "appear to enjoy impunity."

Regulator Position and Platform Functionality

The regulator Ofcom said technology companies must "assess the risk" of people accessing unlawful material on their networks, but did not specify whether it was at this time looking into X or Grok in relation to AI-generated pictures.

Grok is a free AI assistant—with some additional functions—which responds to X users' prompts when they mention it in a message.

It is often used to provide commentary or further background to other posters' remarks, but people on X are also able to alter an uploaded picture through its artificial intelligence picture modification function.

Background of Controversy and Rules

The tool has been condemned for permitting users to produce pictures and footage with explicit content and sexually suggestive content, and it was in the past accused of making sexually explicit material of public figures.

"The platform has been enabling the production and distribution of these images for a long time without taking any action and we have not witnessed any intervention by oversight bodies," Professor McGlynn added.

XAI's own acceptable use policy prohibits "depicting images of persons in a graphic fashion".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was against the law to "generate or circulate deepfakes or child sexual abuse material" and stated this included explicit AI images generated with AI.

It said platforms such as X were required to take "appropriate measures" to "reduce the risk" of users coming across illegal material on their services and to remove it promptly when they learn of it.
