Now is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - Amorim declares.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team players absent from the holiday period victory against Newcastle.

Manager Ruben Amorim contends that altering Man Utd's formation due to external noise would have signaled "the finish" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his trademark three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and chose to deploy an orthodox back four shielded by two central midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the closing minutes as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once famously remarked that even the Pope could pressure him to tweak his approach, Amorim maintains the ability to utilize different formations has consistently been part of his plan.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could only make the switch when his team were doing well enough - lest it would seem as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"At the time I came here the previous campaign, I realized perhaps I lacked the squad to excel in a back three, but it was the start of a journey," he stated.

"We were trying to forge an philosophy. Today is a distinct time. We are missing a lot of players, and we have to adapt, so they see why we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the demands of the media, or the faithful.

"Whenever the press discuss changing the system repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the players will believe I'm changing because of external voices and I feel that is a disaster for the coach.

"Only when we are getting results in our preferred setup, that is the right time to evolve.

"We are going to grow into a stronger side because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to employ three defenders in every match."

Availability Challenges Continue

With just two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is accurate to state his side have been in good form.

He is, however, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior stars already ruled out for the forthcoming fixture against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the injury that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to let him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already saying he has to train," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Leadership Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the pre-match routines from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to continue providing input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's always communicating. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are bad things sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. After he finishes treatment, he goes to observe the other guys training. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Schedule for Injured Players

Although the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
