Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
